Prepping for the Week

Hello to all!

Things are going fantastic here in Uganda. We are in a town called Jinja living with the Every Child Ministries' missionaries, Bruce and Janine Coker. The executive director of ECM, Mark Luckey, is also with us for a few more days. I have to tell you, these people are wonderful. Each of them have shared their stories about how they became missionaries and I just admire them so much. Bruce and Janine have such interesting and diverse backgrounds; it's encouraging to see God work things for His good.

The leaders also briefed us on what to expect while we're here as far as safety, food, the village, the culture, teaching, etc. Things are not so different here, but they are also very different here. We live in a house with Internet and electricity and running water and great food; we talk about everyday things; we went to church in English with the same CCM songs Americans sing in church. Even the weather has resembled a breezy day in May. But there are still rusty red dirt roads, shacks, and money with a 1 USD: 3,000 shilling ratio, people with limited English, eyebrow raises that mean "yes", everyone has "malaria", even if it's only a cold, and they drive on the left side of the road.

This afternoon, the four of us who will be teaching went over our lessons and supplies and how we will present each lesson. The goal of this trip is not to take over the existing teachers' jobs, but to expand their lessons into more hands-on experiences for the kids. So tomorrow, we're meeting with the teachers at the school to give them some ideas on how to make their lessons more experiential and then the rest of the school days we'll be showing how to implement more hands-on learning. Between the three teachers on my team and myself, we have about 65 years of teaching experience (I contribute about .57 years in that total). We just have sooooo many great ideas between all of us. I'm nervous, but excited to see where these lessons go.

I will update tomorrow evening.

Much love to all,

Sarah
